Symposium 2019: The Power of Language

Date and Time: Friday, April 5th from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Location: Room 2435 North Quad (105 S State St, Ann Arbor, MI 48109).

Come join us for a night celebrating the strength of diversity in language through the mediums of art, music, and storytelling.

LingoMatch is a student organization which provides students with a platform to advocate for language access in migrant and refugee communities. This year we are developing a symposium titled “The Power of Language”. The theme of the symposium is: how language barriers create challenges in the POC communities and how these challenges are perceived, understood and interacted with by different social and legal agents (e.g. director of a community center, lawyers, people who have personally experienced said language barriers, etc).

The event is scheduled for Friday, April 5th from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm in room 2435 North Quad (105 S State St, Ann Arbor, MI 48109).

Want to get involved?

LingoMatch is looking for people of color who have experienced language barriers personally and in their profession to present on their experiences. We hope that the presentations will highlight the real-life implications language barriers have on POC communities. Examples of presenters we are interested in having include lawyers, community leaders, activists, translators, teachers, graduate students etc. Presenters will be compensated for their time.

The event will consist of a gallery, food, and presentations. We will be displaying art created by local and student artists of color. In addition to discussing language barriers, the event will give artists an opportunity to discuss how language enriches their life, informs their artwork, as well as how it challenges the individual and community, especially regarding identity, bias, and prejudice. Artists will be compensated for their time and submission. Art pieces will be returned to the artist at the end of the event.
